The Church, which is the Body of Christ, of which you and I are an integral part of, by virtue of her mystical union with Christ, shares in this ocean of Gods Mercy and Compassion. This is what the Church makes available to her members in the form of indulgences. Therefore, in union with Gods intent on saving all souls, we draw from this treasury of graces on behalf of the dead since we are a communion of Gods people not broken even by death. An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.
